🎯

Is this your race?

This is a full IRONMAN — the longest single-day triathlon distance on the planet. It demands months (ideally a full year or more) of structured, progressive training and prior experience at shorter distances. That is not a warning to scare you off; it is the honest foundation you need to cross that finish line safely and joyfully. Beginner fit 1/5: full IRONMAN baseline 2, −1 for possible race-day high above 28 °C (temperatures inconsistently reported up to 33 °C), +1 for calm freshwater lake swim with wetsuit likely allowed, then reduced to 1 because of the strict 15 h 30 min overall cut-off — leaving very little margin for a first-timer without a strong aerobic base.

✅ You’ll love it if…

  • You have already completed at least one Olympic-distance or 70.3 triathlon and are hungry for the ultimate challenge
  • You thrive on long training blocks and enjoy multi-hour weekend rides and runs
  • The idea of finishing in a floodlit medieval city centre gives you genuine goosebumps
  • You have 12–18 months of lead time and a coach or training plan in place

⏳ Build up first if…

  • You have never done an open-water swim longer than 1 km — build that first
  • Your longest bike ride to date is under 100 km — add distance gradually before committing
  • You are brand-new to triathlon — start with a Sprint, then an Olympic, then a 70.3, then revisit this page
  • The 15 h 30 min cut-off feels tight given your current pace — that gap needs to close before race day

🗺️

The course, demystified

Three very different worlds in one day: a tranquil Basque lake at sunrise, two rolling loops through the golden plains and villages of Álava, and a flat urban marathon that ends in the heart of one of Spain's most beautiful old cities.

🏊 Swim · 3.8 km

Respira y flota (breathe and float) — the start is at Ullibarri-Gamboa Lake in Landa Provincial Park, a freshwater reservoir described as calm and tranquil. Water temperature typically sits around 19–22 °C in July, making a wetsuit both legal and likely — great news for buoyancy and warmth. The venue is outside the city, so plan your race-morning transport carefully; check the official athlete guide for shuttle details as soon as they are published.

Rookie trap: 3.8 km is a long time in the water. Seed yourself honestly at the start to avoid the washing-machine chaos of faster swimmers. Practise sighting (lifting your eyes to spot buoys) in training — in a lake with no lane ropes, a straight line saves real energy.
🚴 Bike · 180 km

The bike course is reported as two loops through the Álava plains and Basque villages — generally rolling and described as fast. Elevation gain figures in available sources range from roughly 1,000 m to 1,700 m; check the official 2027 course page for the verified profile before you build your training plan. The plains riding is manageable, but 180 km is 180 km — respect the distance.

Rookie trap: Pacing is everything on a full IRONMAN bike leg. Going out too hard in the first loop is the classic mistake — your legs will remind you of it on the marathon. In July heat (which could reach the high 20s or beyond on race day), fueling and hydration every 20–30 minutes is not optional; practise your nutrition strategy in training exactly as you plan to use it on race day.
🏃 Run · 42.2 km

The marathon runs through central Vitoria-Gasteiz on a flat urban course reported as multiple loops, finishing in the historic city centre. Flat is genuinely helpful after 180 km on the bike — no climbs to dread. The city setting also means crowds, noise, and atmosphere to carry you through the tough kilometres.

Rookie trap: A flat course does not remove the hardest challenge of a full IRONMAN marathon: managing accumulated fatigue, fueling, hydration, and heat over 42.2 km when your legs have already done everything. Walk breaks are not failure — they are strategy. Many experienced athletes run-walk the back half and still finish strong.

12–18 months out (now–early 2026)Build your base and registerRegister as soon as entries open — full IRONMAN races sell out. If you have not yet done a 70.3, put one on the calendar for 2026 as a stepping stone. Find a coach or a structured training plan designed for first-time IRONMAN athletes. Book flights and accommodation early.
9–12 months out (mid-2026)Lock in logistics and start long trainingConfirm your accommodation and bike transport plan. Begin building your long ride and long run distances progressively. Practise open-water swimming regularly — aim for at least one session per week in a lake or open venue.
6 months out (Jan 2027)Race-specific training ramps upYour longest training weeks begin. Practise your race-day nutrition strategy on long rides and brick sessions (bike immediately followed by a run). If heat is a concern, consider some training in warmer conditions.
3 months out (Apr 2027)Peak block and taper prepYour biggest training weeks happen here, followed by a structured taper. Finalise kit, nutrition products, and any race-week travel details. Check the official athlete guide when it is published for cut-off times, transition rules, and shuttle information.
Race week (Jul 6–10, 2027)Arrive, rest, and trust your trainingArrive at least 3–4 days early to adjust, attend the mandatory athlete briefing, rack your bike, and do a short open-water swim to preview the course. Eat familiar foods, sleep as much as you can, and resist the urge to walk the entire marathon course on your feet the day before.
🧭

Your race-morning Run-of-Show

Pros never improvise race morning — they run a script. Here’s yours.

Race morning (very early)
Allow extra time for transport to the swim venue at Landa Provincial Park — it is outside the city. Check the official athlete guide for shuttle times and transition opening hours.
~7:00 AM
Race start. Full IRONMAN events typically use a rolling self-seeded swim start — you enter the water in waves based on your estimated swim time. No need to rush to the front.
Post-swim
Transition 1 (T1): wetsuit off, helmet and bike shoes on. Take a breath — you have 180 km of riding ahead and the day is long.
Bike leg (roughly 5–8+ hours for most age-groupers)
Two reported loops through the Álava plains. Stick to your nutrition plan every 20–30 minutes regardless of how you feel.
Post-bike
Transition 2 (T2): bike racked, running shoes on. Your legs will feel strange for the first kilometre — that is normal and it passes.
Marathon (roughly 4–7+ hours)
Multiple loops through central Vitoria-Gasteiz. The crowd grows as the day goes on. Run your own race; walk when you need to.
Finish line (up to 15 h 30 min after start)
The historic city centre finish. The cut-off is firm — know your target pace and build in a buffer. Cross the line and hear your name called.

If-Then: your calm-in-chaos grid

A plan for the moments that scare you. Read it twice the night before.

IfThe water temperature on race day is below 20 °C
ThenWetsuit rules are typically more permissive in cooler water — but always check the official pre-race briefing for the day's ruling. A wetsuit adds buoyancy and warmth; practise swimming in yours before race day so it does not feel restrictive.
IfRace-day temperatures are forecast above 28–30 °C
ThenSlow your target paces, increase fluid intake at every aid station, use ice and cold sponges on the run, and do not be too proud to walk. Heat is the great equaliser in a full IRONMAN — respect it.
IfYou miss the bike cut-off
ThenIRONMAN events have intermediate cut-offs as well as the overall 15 h 30 min limit. Know the cut-off times for each leg before race day — they are published in the athlete guide. If you are pulled from the course, the day is not wasted; you have learned what to build for next time.
IfYour bike develops a mechanical problem on course
ThenStay calm. Carry two spare tubes, a CO₂ inflator or pump, and a multi-tool. IRONMAN courses typically have mechanical support vehicles — flag one down if you cannot fix the issue yourself. Practise changing a tube at home until it takes under five minutes.
IfYou feel terrible on the marathon
ThenAlmost every IRONMAN athlete feels terrible at some point on the marathon. Slow down, take in calories and fluids at the next aid station, and give yourself 10–15 minutes before deciding anything. The feeling usually passes. If it does not, your safety comes first.

Bringing a support crew?

Vitoria-Gasteiz is a compact, walkable city with a beautiful historic centre — a genuinely great place to spend a day cheering. The marathon's multiple loops through the city mean you can see your athlete several times without moving far.

  • The marathon course runs through central Vitoria-Gasteiz and the historic city centre — position yourself along the main loop to catch your athlete multiple times
  • The finish line is reported to be in the historic city centre — arrive early for a good spot as the day goes on and the crowd builds
  • The swim venue at Landa Provincial Park is outside the city — if you want to watch the swim start, plan transport separately and check official spectator guidance when published
  • Bring sun protection, water, and snacks — a full IRONMAN day runs from early morning until late evening
  • Check the official spectator map and any road-closure notices before race day; urban marathon courses often restrict vehicle access to parts of the city
