🎯

Is this your race?

Chattanooga is a genuinely beautiful first half-Ironman — but the summer heat and hilly bike course mean you'll want a solid base before you show up.

✅ You’ll love it if…

  • You've been swimming consistently and feel comfortable in open water (rivers move — that's part of the fun!)
  • You've done some hilly rides and know how to pace yourself on climbs
  • You thrive in warm weather and have practiced training in the heat
  • You love a city-center race atmosphere with crowds cheering on the riverfront

⏳ Build up first if…

  • You're brand new to open-water swimming — get some river or lake practice in before race day
  • Your longest bike ride is still mostly flat — add some hill sessions over the next several months
  • Heat is a concern for you — build in heat-acclimation training as summer approaches

Not yet? That’s normal. Start here → take the 2-minute Readiness Assessment.

🗺️

The course, demystified

Three legs, one unforgettable day: float downstream on the Tennessee River, roll through the Georgia countryside, then run two loops along the riverfront as the crowd pulls you home.

🏊 Swim · 1.2 mi (1.9 km)

El nado empieza río arriba en el Tennessee River y termina en Ross's Landing — el río te lleva, lo que hace que muchos nadadores principiantes completen esta etapa más rápido de lo esperado. The swim is point-to-point, meaning you start at one spot and the current gently carries you downstream to the finish. You'll swim a short section upriver first before turning and riding the current all the way to Ross's Landing. Sighting (lifting your head to check where you're going) is still important even with a current helping you.

Rookie trap: A current-assisted swim sounds easy, but the river start can feel chaotic — lots of athletes, splashing, and the need to navigate. Don't panic if you get bumped; just find open water and settle into your rhythm. Practice sighting in open water before race day.
🚴 Bike · 56.7 mi (91 km)

The bike course leaves downtown Chattanooga, heads into northern Georgia, and takes you through rolling countryside with long climbs and rewarding descents. Total elevation gain is 2,218 feet — think of it as several long hills rather than one giant mountain. The scenery is genuinely stunning, which helps when your legs are working hard.

Rookie trap: The biggest beginner mistake here is going out too hard on the early climbs because you feel fresh and excited. Pace yourself like you're saving energy for the run — because you are. Shift to an easier gear earlier than you think you need to.
🏃 Run · 13.1 mi (21.1 km)

The run is two loops along the Riverwalk and Riverfront Parkway — mostly flat to gently rolling, right in the heart of downtown. Two loops means you'll pass the finish area and the loudest crowds twice, which is a huge mental boost. Spectators are concentrated here, so expect noise, cowbells, and people cheering your name.

Rookie trap: Two loops can play tricks on your mind — the first loop feels great, the second can feel long. Break it into smaller chunks mentally: just get to the turnaround, then just get to the next aid station. Also, late-August heat on exposed riverfront sections is real — use every aid station, pour water on yourself, and don't skip the ice.

Your race-morning Run-of-Show

Pros never improvise race morning — they run a script. Here’s yours.

~5:00 AM
Wake up, eat your practiced race-morning breakfast, and get to transition early — race morning logistics always take longer than you expect.
~6:00 AM
Set up your transition area, check your bike, pump tires, and get into your wetsuit (if wearing one). Find your calm.
7:00 AM
Wave starts begin. Your wave time depends on your age group — check the official start list closer to race day.
Swim finish
Exit the Tennessee River at Ross's Landing, run through Transition 1 (T1), and head out on the bike.
On the bike
Roll out of downtown, climb into Georgia, enjoy the views, and pace yourself. Eat and drink on a schedule — don't wait until you're hungry or thirsty.
Bike finish
Return to Ross's Landing, rack your bike in Transition 2 (T2), swap to running shoes, and head out on the run.
On the run
Two loops along the Riverwalk. Use every aid station. The crowd is loudest here — let them carry you.
Finish line
Cross the finish line at Ross's Landing. You are an IRONMAN 70.3 finisher. Soak it in.

If-Then: your calm-in-chaos grid

A plan for the moments that scare you. Read it twice the night before.

IfThe river current is stronger than expected on race day
ThenEnjoy it — a faster swim is a gift. Focus on sighting to stay on course rather than fighting the water.
IfYou go out too hard on the first bike climb
ThenEase off immediately and let faster athletes pass. A conservative first half of the bike almost always produces a better run.
IfYou feel overheated on the run
ThenSlow down, walk if needed, and use ice and cold water at every aid station. Finishing safely matters far more than your time.
IfThe second run loop feels mentally brutal
ThenBreak it into tiny goals — just reach the next corner, the next aid station, the next mile marker. You've already done the hard part.
IfRace-week nerves hit hard
ThenThat's completely normal — it means you care. Your training is done. Trust the work you've put in and focus on the process, not the outcome.

Bringing a support crew?

Chattanooga is one of the best spectator races out there — the compact downtown layout means your crew can see you multiple times without a car.

  • Ross's Landing: watch the swim finish and both transitions — this is the heart of the race.
  • Riverfront Parkway / Riverwalk: the run course passes here twice, so plant yourself here and cheer athletes on both loops.
  • Downtown Chattanooga streets near the bike exit: catch athletes heading out on the bike and returning — two sightings for the price of one corner.
  • The finish line at Ross's Landing: the most emotional spot of the day. Be here for the final miles of the run.
