IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta
A flat, fast desert half-iron in the sunny Coachella Valley — the kind of race that turns 'someday' into a finisher medal.
Where it is
LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA
Is this your race?
La Quinta is one of those rare 70.3s where the terrain genuinely works in a first-timer's favor — flat roads, calm open water, and a resort finish line that feels like a celebration.
✅ You’ll love it if…
- You want a 70.3 debut without mountain bike climbs or choppy ocean swims
- You thrive in dry, mild December weather (think crisp mornings, warm afternoons)
- You love the idea of finishing at a resort with mountain views all around you
- Your training base is solid and you're ready to commit to a full half-iron distance
⏳ Build up first if…
- Cold water (57 °F / 14 °C) makes you nervous — budget time for wetsuit swims in cool water before race day
- You've never raced longer than a sprint or Olympic — add a tune-up race first so the distance isn't a surprise
- December is tight on your calendar — registration, travel, and a 20-week build all need to fit

The course, demystified
Three legs, one stunning desert backdrop. Here's what each section actually feels like on the ground.
El nado es en el Lago Cahuilla — an inland lake known for calm, flat water with no waves or tides to fight. That's a big deal for beginners. The catch: at around 57 °F (14 °C), the water is cold enough to take your breath away in the first 30 seconds if you're not ready for it. A wetsuit is almost certainly required (and very welcome). Once you settle into your stroke, the conditions are as forgiving as open-water swimming gets.
The bike is the good news story of this race. Flat, fast roads through La Quinta and Thermal — including a memorable lap around Thermal Raceway — mean you won't be grinding up long climbs. Many athletes post their best-ever bike splits here. The desert scenery is wide-open and striking.
The run winds through the SilverRock Resort with mountain views that make the miles feel shorter than they are. The course is flat to gently rolling — no serious hills — and the resort setting means spectators, aid stations, and atmosphere are all close at hand.

The wider Palm Springs area has a huge range of hotels, vacation rentals, and price points. It's a 20–30 minute drive to the venue — very manageable if you plan your race-morning timing. Great choice if you're turning this into a longer desert getaway.

The Coachella Valley is spread out and public transit is limited. A rental makes athlete check-in, bike drop-off, and post-race recovery significantly easier.
Flying with a bike? Budget $50–$150 each way with most airlines, or research local bike rental and shipping services in the Palm Springs area.
Athlete check-in and bike racking typically happen the day before. Arriving Friday gives you Saturday to settle, rack, and rest without rushing.
