🎯

Is this your race?

Valencia 70.3 is one of the friendliest half-iron debuts in Europe — a fast bike, a flat run, and a finish line that looks like a sci-fi movie set.

✅ You’ll love it if…

  • You want a course that rewards steady effort over technical skill
  • A city-centre race atmosphere energises you — crowds, music, landmarks
  • You've been eyeing a European destination race and want culture built into the trip
  • You like the idea of finishing somewhere genuinely spectacular

⏳ Build up first if…

  • You're still building your open-water swim confidence — get some harbour or beach practice in before April
  • You haven't yet done a standalone Olympic-distance triathlon; use the months ahead to tick that box first
  • You need a structured 20-week training plan — start mapping one now

Not yet? That’s normal. Start here → take the 2-minute Readiness Assessment.

🗺️

The course, demystified

Three legs, one beautiful city. The swim gets you started, the bike lets you fly, and the run brings you home through Valencia's most iconic streets.

🏊 Swim · 1.9 km

The swim takes place in open water — sources describe it as either a sheltered harbour basin or Playa de la Malvarrosa beach. Either way, expect a mass or rolling start in calm-ish conditions for mid-April. The exact venue should be confirmed closer to race week via the official IRONMAN site. (Aguas abiertas — open water — can feel very different from a pool, but a sheltered harbour is about as gentle an introduction as you can get.)

Rookie trap: The swim venue description conflicts between 'harbour basin' and 'Malvarrosa Beach' in available sources — don't plan your warm-up logistics until the official race guide drops. Whichever it is, do at least two open-water practice swims before April so the environment feels familiar.
🚴 Bike · 90 km

Widely called the fastest bike course in Spain — a fast road route through Valencia's inner province with some rolling terrain. With around 594–599 m of total elevation gain (a planning estimate; check the official course guide for confirmed figures), it's not dead flat, but there are no brutal climbs. Think of it as gently rolling rather than mountainous. A road bike or entry-level triathlon bike will serve you well here.

Rookie trap: Fast course ≠ flat course. Beginners often go out too hard on a quick-feeling road and blow up before the run. Ride to your heart-rate or power target, not to the speed of the riders around you. Those estimated 594–599 metres of climbing will quietly drain your legs if you ignore them.
🏃 Run · 21.1 km

A flat, urban half-marathon that finishes at the breathtaking City of Arts and Sciences — Santiago Calatrava's futuristic complex that looks like it landed from another planet. Crowds line the route through Valencia's emblematic spaces, which is exactly the kind of energy you want when your legs are tired.

Rookie trap: Flat runs in April can still get warm by mid-morning. Because there are no hills to force you to slow down, pace discipline is everything. Start conservatively — you can always speed up in the final 5k, but you can't un-blow-up a 10k bonk.
💸

The real cost of this race

Here's an honest planning estimate — treat these as ballpark figures to build your budget, not confirmed prices. Entry fee was not available in our sources, so check the official IRONMAN site for current registration costs.

All-in planning estimate (excl. confirmed entry fee — add that separately once you check ironman.com)—$1,200–$3,150+ depending on origin and choices
Return on Race. You cross a finish line that looks like a film set, in a city that invented paella, having just swum, biked, and run 113 kilometres. That feeling — the medal, the crowd, the 'I actually did it' — doesn't fit on a spreadsheet. It's the kind of thing you'll describe to people for years.

How to fly in

Valencia has its own international airport (Aeropuerto de Valencia, VLC) with direct connections from many European cities, and easy connections via Madrid (MAD) or Barcelona (BCN) from further afield. From VLC, the city centre and race area are roughly 15–20 minutes by taxi or the airport metro line. Check Google Flights or Skyscanner as your dates approach for the best routing from your origin.

Getting around & the rest of the trip

🔗 Open-water practice
Valencia's beaches and harbour area give you options to practise open-water swimming before race day — use them.
🔗 Carb-load the Valencia way
Arroz al horno, fideuà, or a classic paella the night before — Valencia invented rice dishes. Enjoy it.
🔗 Post-race tourism
The City of Arts and Sciences, the old town, and the Mercado Central are all worth a slow post-race wander.

Your countdown: train and book

One timeline that fuses fitness milestones with the trip deadlines first-timers miss. Coral dots = book-it deadlines.

Now → 12 months outRegister and build your baseSecure your entry as soon as registration opens — IRONMAN 70.3 races sell out. Start a consistent swim-bike-run routine even if distances are short. Consistency now beats heroic sessions later.
9–10 months outBook flights and accommodationApril in Valencia is popular. Lock in flights and a hotel now to get the best prices and availability, especially if you're shipping or renting a bike.
6 months outStart your structured 20-week planThis is roughly when a proper half-iron training block begins. If you haven't done an Olympic-distance tri yet, slot one in around this time as a confidence-builder.
3 months outSort your bike transportDecide whether you're flying with your bike (check airline bike fees), shipping it, or renting locally. Book whichever option you choose — good rental bikes in race cities go fast.
6–8 weeks outDo at least two open-water swimsPool fitness and open-water swimming feel very different. Get into open water — a lake, the sea, a harbour — at least twice before race day so the environment is familiar, not frightening.
Race weekArrive early, verify the swim venueAim to arrive Thursday or Friday. Attend the athlete briefing (mandatory), rack your bike on Saturday, and confirm the swim location via the official race guide — sources conflict on this detail, so go straight to IRONMAN's official communications.

If-Then: your calm-in-chaos grid

A plan for the moments that scare you. Read it twice the night before.

IfI've never swum in open water before
ThenStart now — not race week. Find a local open-water swim group or supervised lake session and go at least 4–6 times before April. The water isn't the scary part; the unfamiliarity is. Fix the unfamiliarity.
IfI'm worried about the bike elevation
ThenThe estimated 594–599 m over 90 km is manageable — think of it as gently rolling, not hilly. Include some rolling rides in your training and practise keeping a steady effort on the ups rather than hammering them.
IfIt gets warm on the run
ThenGrab water and sponges at every aid station, even if you don't feel thirsty yet. Pour water on your neck and wrists. Slow down slightly rather than blowing up — a 30-second-per-km slowdown now saves you from a walk-shuffle finish.
IfI'm not sure whether to use a wetsuit
ThenWater temperature for mid-April Valencia wasn't confirmed in our sources. Check the official IRONMAN athlete guide closer to race week — they'll publish water temp and wetsuit rules. In the meantime, own a wetsuit or know where to rent one locally.
IfI'm travelling alone and feeling nervous
ThenThe IRONMAN athlete village and briefing are genuinely friendly places. Introduce yourself to the person next to you at registration — odds are they're feeling exactly the same way.

Bringing a support crew?

Valencia is one of the best spectator cities in European triathlon — compact, walkable, and full of iconic spots where you can cheer multiple times on the same day.

  • The finish line at the City of Arts and Sciences is the unmissable spot — arrive early for a good position and stay for the emotion
  • The run course passes through several of Valencia's emblematic city spaces — check the official course map once published to find the best cheer points
  • The bike course heads out into the inner province, so spectators typically focus on the transition area (the hub where athletes switch from swimming to biking, and biking to running) and the run/finish for maximum athlete-spotting
  • Valencia's café culture means you can watch, grab a coffee, reposition, and cheer again — it's a great spectator day out
