Thrilling Youth Triathlon: Kids Conquer Swimming, Biking, and Running Challenges

YMCA of Steuben County Youth Triathlon

On a bright and early Saturday morning, the YMCA of Steuben County was buzzing with energy and excitement as it hosted its annual youth triathlon. This event, a cornerstone of community engagement and youth athletics, saw children from various age groups pushing their limits in a series of swimming, biking, and running challenges.

The triathlon was divided into three age categories, each with its own set distance, ensuring that the races were both challenging and age-appropriate. The youngest group, the Guppies (8 years and under), kicked off their race with a spirited 25-yard swim, followed by a one-mile bike ride and a half-mile run. The middle group, the Minnows (ages 9-12), tackled a 100-yard swim, a two-mile bike ride, and a one-mile run. The oldest group, the Sharks (ages 13-18), faced the most demanding course: a 200-yard swim, a five-mile bike ride, and a two-mile run.

Eli Snyder, representing Edon, Ohio, clinched the title for the Sharks with an impressive time of 39 minutes and 38 seconds. Not far behind, in the same age group, was Hope Rago of Angola, who not only topped the girls' chart but also placed third overall with a time of 60:35.

In the Minnows category, Eli Beer from Hudson emerged victorious with a time of 18:57, showcasing his prowess across all three disciplines. Achaiah McCue, also from Angola, was the fastest girl in this group, finishing her triathlon in 28:41 and securing fourth place overall.

The Guppies were no less competitive. Kennedy Eldridge of Angola won the overall title with a time of 15:58. Bennett Beer, another young athlete from Hudson, led the boys with a time of 16:53, finishing second in his category.

This event not only highlighted the athletic talents of these young individuals but also underscored the importance of sports in fostering discipline, resilience, and community spirit among youth. Each participant, regardless of whether they won or not, gained valuable experience and lessons in perseverance and sportsmanship.

The YMCA of Steuben County continues to be a beacon of positive influence and support in the community, encouraging young people to lead healthy, active lives. Events like these not only strengthen the body but also build character, preparing the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow.
