Denver Triathlon's Maira Carreau Races to Seventh at Thrilling National Championships

University of Denver Pioneers Shine at 2024 Collegiate National Championships

In a display of grit and teamwork, the University of Denver Pioneers women's triathlon team made a remarkable showing at the 2024 Collegiate National Championships, held at the picturesque Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Florida. The event, orchestrated by USA Triathlon, saw sophomore Maira Carreau lead the charge, securing a top-10 finish and her second consecutive first-team All-American honor.

Carreau, who began the race day ranked 40th following the swim time trials, executed a strategic comeback. Clocking a total time of 59:56, with splits of 10:05 in swimming, 30:34 in biking, and a swift 17:43 in the 5K run, she not only showcased her prowess but also her resilience. This performance was a slight improvement over her previous championship victory, underscoring her growth and determination.

The Pioneers' collective effort was nothing short of inspiring. All seven athletes finished in the top 40, contributing to a team total of 847 points and a commendable fifth-place finish in the team standings. The cohesion was palpable as the team, led by Coach Barbara Perkins, moved as a unit, particularly during the cycling segment where they grouped together, showcasing a level of teamwork previously unseen in the program's history.

Coach Perkins reflected on the team's dynamics, "The culture of this team is electric, and they love each other so much. It's been a huge learning year for the team with a lot of personal growth. We fought all year for each other and never gave up."

Canadian athletes and sisters, Beatrice and Clara Normand, also made significant contributions. Despite starting 61st and 64th respectively after the swim, they powered through the cycling segment with some of the fastest times of the day, helping the Pioneers ascend the rankings.

The event was not without its challenges. A new format was introduced due to damage at the original swim venue caused by Hurricane Milton. The competition turned into a pursuit-style race, beginning with a 750-meter open water swim at the nearby Clermont Watersports Complex, followed by a staggered start into the cycling and running segments.

In the end, the University of Arizona emerged as the new national champions, breaking a long-standing dominance by Arizona State. The Wildcats tallied 942 points, narrowly edging out Arizona State's 920. Queens University of Charlotte, Texas Christian University, and the University of Denver rounded out the top five.

As the Pioneers wrap up a season of hard-fought races and personal bests, they look forward to a well-deserved rest before resuming training in January. With the spring season on the horizon, the team is poised for more achievements and hopefully, more moments of triumph and togetherness.
