Leon's Triathlon: "America's Race"

Leon's Triathlon: "America's Race"

A tribute to military heroes and athletic excellence spanning over four decades.

For over four decades, Leon's Triathlon has stood as a beacon of patriotism and athletic prowess in Northwest Indiana, aptly earning its title as "America's Race." As we edge closer to the 81st anniversary of D-Day, this event not only challenges athletes but also serves as a profound tribute to our military heroes.

A Legacy Born from Patriotism

In the heart of 1983, Leon Wolek, a native of New Chicago, envisioned a race that would bridge the gap between athletic endeavor and military honor. This vision materialized into the first Leon's Triathlon, setting the stage near the Izaak Walton League property in Hobart. Over the years, it found a permanent home at Wolf Lake Memorial Park in Hammond, where it flourishes to this day.

Scheduled strategically around the anniversary of D-Day, Leon's Triathlon is more than a test of endurance; it's a commemoration of the sacrifices made during the pivotal Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. "It's about honoring and not forgetting D-Day and the sacrifices that were made," Wolek remarks, underscoring the race's deep historical ties.

The Heart of "America's Race"

What distinguishes Leon's Triathlon is its heartfelt dedication to celebrating military service. The event kicks off with a stirring opening ceremony featuring a massive American flag, a Huey helicopter flyover, and bagpipes—a poignant reminder of the race's deeper purpose.

Inclusivity at Its Core

Leon's Triathlon prides itself on being inclusive, welcoming everyone from elite paratriathletes and seasoned military veterans to first-time civilian competitors. This inclusivity ensures that the race remains competitive yet accessible, embodying its reputation as the premier paratriathlon and military tribute race.

Fueled by Veteran Spirit

The race's authenticity and patriotic spirit are upheld by the veterans who help organize it. "This race, America's Race, is built by older and younger veterans. This is put up with heartfelt patriotism," Wolek emphasizes. Their involvement ensures that the event is more than just a competition—it's a living tribute to those who have served.

Experience the Challenge at Wolf Lake Memorial Park

This year's race, set for June 1, offers athletes the choice between a Sprint and an Olympic Distance Triathlon, with courses that take full advantage of the scenic Wolf Lake Memorial Park. Participants will navigate a swim in Wolf Lake, a bike ride on traffic-free roads, and a run along the park’s trails, all while experiencing the camaraderie and competitive spirit that define this event.

Joining the Tribute

Whether you're a seasoned triathlete or a newcomer to the sport, Leon's Triathlon invites you to partake in a race that's as much about physical endurance as it is about honoring our military. Registration is open, and detailed preparation tips are available for those new to the sport, ensuring everyone is ready to face the challenge.

Beyond the Race

Leon's Triathlon is part of a broader series of events that include the Leon's Canine Triathlon and a 9/11 Remembrance Obstacle Course, further emphasizing community and military engagement throughout the year.

As Leon's Triathlon marks its 42nd anniversary, it continues to inspire and unite athletes, veterans, and spectators in a shared celebration of service and athleticism. Whether participating, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, this event offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a legacy of honor and achievement.
