Gold Coast Triathlon
A flat, fast Olympic-distance age-group race held as part of the Gold Coast T100 Triathlon weekend in Queensland — a well-supported, beginner-accessible introduction to open-water triathlon.
Where it is
Queensland, Australia
Is this your race?
This is a genuine beginner-friendly Olympic-distance race on one of Australia's flattest, most spectator-friendly courses. The Gold Coast's coastal terrain keeps the bike and run manageable, and the Broadwater venue is more sheltered than an ocean beach — though it is still open saltwater, so some unpredictability is possible. Heat is the main wildcard: race-day air temperatures are typically around 28 °C, which adds physiological load even on a flat course. Beginner fit 3/5: Olympic baseline 4, −1 for open saltwater swim with unverified chop/current conditions, −1 for typical race-day highs around 28 °C, +1 for flat bike and run course — net 3.
✅ You’ll love it if…
- You want your first open-water triathlon on a flat, well-supported course
- You thrive in warm weather and have practised running in the heat
- You are comfortable swimming in saltwater and have done at least one open-water session
- You want a big-city race atmosphere with easy spectator access
⏳ Build up first if…
- You have never swum in open saltwater — get at least two or three ocean or estuary sessions in before race day
- You are not yet comfortable running in temperatures around 28 °C — build heat-acclimatisation runs into your plan
- You have not yet completed a sprint-distance triathlon — consider doing one as a confidence-builder first

The course, demystified
The race starts and transitions at Broadwater Parklands in Southport, sends you out on a flat coastal bike loop, and finishes on the famous Surfers Paradise Esplanade — a genuinely scenic point-to-point experience.
Respira y flota (breathe and float) — the swim takes place in the Broadwater, a sheltered saltwater estuary at Broadwater Parklands in Southport. Third-party sources report water temperatures typically in the 24–26 °C range for March, which is warm and comfortable. The exact course configuration and current or chop conditions were not verified by an official source, so check the race briefing for the latest details. Wetsuit eligibility has not been confirmed — verify with the organiser before you pack.
The bike course follows the flat Gold Coast terrain. No verified total elevation gain figure was available, but the Gold Coast is widely described as one of Australia's flattest race venues — expect a fast, power-friendly ride rather than a climbing challenge. Exact course routing was not verified; check the official race map when it is published.
The run is a flat coastal and urban course that finishes at the Surfers Paradise Esplanade, roughly 5 km south of the transition area. Expect a crowd-lined finish in one of Australia's most recognisable beachside settings. With typical March temperatures around 28 °C, heat management is the key variable on the run.

Bringing a support crew?
The Gold Coast course is a spectator's dream: a flat, accessible layout with two distinct viewing hubs connected by public transport.
- Broadwater Parklands, Southport: watch the swim start, cheer athletes out of the water and into transition — this is the most action-packed early-race spot.
- Along the bike and run course: the flat coastal roads make it easy to find a spot and cheer multiple times as athletes pass.
- Surfers Paradise Esplanade finish line: the most atmospheric spot — a beachside crowd, a recognisable skyline, and the emotional finish-line moment. Take the light rail from Southport South station (across the road from Broadwater Parklands) to reach Surfers Paradise quickly.
- Timing tip: transition closes before the race starts, so make your way to the Esplanade finish area well before the first athletes are expected to arrive — check the official schedule for projected finish windows.
