Discover the Triumphs of Team USA at the 2024 Paris Paralympics

In the heart of Paris, under the shadow of the iconic Pont Alexandre III, a tale of perseverance and triumph unfolded at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Kendall Gretsch, a dedicated athlete from Downers Grove, showcased her indomitable spirit, clinching a silver medal in the women's PTWC para triathlon. This remarkable achievement marks her seventh Paralympic medal, a testament to her relentless dedication and skill.

Kendall, who has been a beacon of inspiration, was born with spina bifida and has risen above challenges to excel in her sport. Her journey to the podium involved intense preparation, culminating in a race time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 46 seconds, closely following Australia’s Lauren Parker. The course challenged competitors with a 750-meter swim in the Seine, a grueling 20-kilometer handcycle race, and a 5-kilometer sprint in a racing wheelchair. Despite the tough competition, Kendall's performance was nothing short of stellar.

Reflecting on her journey, Kendall shared, "Any time we race against each other I know it's going to be a hard race. Today was no exception. This course is phenomenal. I gave everything I could today and also the past three years leading into this. That was the best I could do. I am just so proud of everything I did to get here. That's all you can ask for."

Her achievements at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she won gold, and her successes in both the biathlon and cross-country skiing at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, highlight her versatile athletic prowess. After "an intense three years," Kendall plans to take a well-deserved break from triathlon training, recharging for the upcoming Nordic events at the 2026 Paralympic Games in Milano Cortina.

On the same victorious day, another story of resilience and strength was written by Naperville native Sarah Adam, alongside the United States’ national wheelchair rugby team. They clinched a silver medal after a fierce battle against Japan in the gold medal game at Champ-de-Mars Arena. Sarah, an assistant professor of occupational science and therapy at St. Louis University, not only contributed significantly to her team's success but also led in scoring with 55 tries throughout the games.

These athletes, representing Team USA, not only bring medals home but also bring stories of courage, determination, and the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity. Their performances in Paris are a beacon of inspiration for many, proving that with passion and perseverance, every challenge can be transformed into a victory lap.
