Triathlon Community Mourns the Tragic Loss of Beloved Race Director Michael Brown

In Memoriam: Michael Brown

The triathlon community is in mourning following the unexpected passing of Michael Brown, a luminary in the world of triathlon and cycling race directing. Brown, who was just 51, left us suddenly on August 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly shaped the sport in Canada.

Michael's journey in the world of athletics began in the waters, where he excelled as a competitive swimmer. He humorously recounted to the Penticton Herald in 2016 how a triathlon swim relay he participated in back in 1986 marked his first foray into the triathlon world. However, it was the camaraderie and, frankly, the beer, that initially drew him to rugby, a sport he cherished until his retirement at 35. It was then that the triathlon called him back, offering a new chapter and a way to maintain his fitness.

Transitioning from athlete to orchestrator, Michael took the helm of the Great White North triathlon in 2012, and his impact only grew from there. He later acquired and directed the Challenge Penticton for five years and played a pivotal role in bringing the inaugural World Triathlon Multisport Festival to Penticton in 2017. His leadership extended beyond local events as he served as the executive director of L’Etape Canada by Tour de France and as a senior director of events for Super League Triathlon.

Michael's sudden departure is deeply felt across the triathlon and cycling communities, both of which he helped shape with his passionate and dedicated spirit. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and their two children, McKinley and Jonah, who are in our thoughts during this profoundly difficult time.

To his family, friends, and everyone touched by his work, our heartfelt condolences go out to you.
