Natchez Woman Clinches Third Place in Grueling Franklin County Hybrid Triathlon
In the heart of Franklin County, the annual Homochitto River Triathlon unfolded on October 26, challenging participants with a course that tested their endurance and versatility. Among the spirited competitors was Candace Norman from Natchez, who secured a commendable third place, showcasing her resilience and athletic prowess.
The triathlon, a true test of determination, consisted of a 3.1-mile run through sandy and gravel-laden trails, a 10-mile bike ride that included both asphalt and challenging gravel sections, and a grueling 6-mile paddle down the Homochitto River. The river segment proved particularly daunting, with participants navigating around logs, and at times, dragging their crafts through shallow waters, as described by event organizer Vincent Woodcock.
Chase Spring from Franklin County took the top spot, followed by Eric Boyd from McComb, with our own Candace Norman rounding out the top three. The event drew 23 hardy souls from various locales, including as far as Gulfport, and was supported by local sponsors Team Barnabas and Vine Brothers Meats.
Vincent Woodcock shared that the hybrid nature of the triathlon made it exceptionally challenging this year. The dry conditions transformed the 5K run into a battle against fluffy sand and large gravel, pushing participants to shift their focus from setting personal bests to ensuring personal safety. The cycling segment was no less forgiving, featuring steep hills and loose gravel that demanded utmost caution and skill.
Despite the arduous conditions, all participants crossed the finish line by lunchtime, with the weather warming from a cool 57 degrees at the start to a sunny 80 degrees. This triathlon was not just a race but a narrative of human spirit and camaraderie, where every participant, cheered by the community and supported by each other, emerged victorious.
The Homochitto River Triathlon continues to be a highlight in Franklin County's sporting calendar, a testament to the resilience and adventurous spirit of its participants.
