Navy Women's Triathlon Shows Grit at Duquesne Collegiate Cup

In the crisp morning air of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, the Navy women's triathlon team lined up with determination at the starting line of the Duquesne Collegiate Cup. This event marked their second competition of the 2024 season, challenging the team with a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5k run. Despite facing early setbacks, particularly in the cycling segment, the team managed to secure a commendable sixth place out of 11 participating teams, amassing 180 points.

Head Coach Billy Edwards reflected on the event with optimism, stating, "Today was another step in the process. I am excited about how the team kept in it despite some setbacks early on the bike." He praised the newcomers, Natalie, Dylan, and Sailor, for their robust performance in the swimming segment, thanks to their rigorous pool training over the summer. He also highlighted the strategic contributions from MC and Ella, who stepped up significantly in this competitive field.

Freshman Natalie Wang, hailing from San Diego, California, led the scoring for Navy for the second consecutive event. She finished ninth overall with a time of 1:05:17.76, showing remarkable resilience by recovering from an initial 16th place in the swim to a strong finish in the run. Her teammate, Dylan Cashin, also a freshman, added 48 team points with her overall 22nd place finish, demonstrating consistency across the swim and run segments.

Senior Emely Vela showcased her experience by overcoming a slower start in the swim to finish strong in the bike and run, ultimately placing 25th for the day. The performances of MC Kistler and newcomer Ella Sims also contributed valuable points to the team's tally, demonstrating the depth and potential of the squad.

The team is now gearing up for their next challenge at the Robious Landing Collegiate Cup in Midlothian, Virginia, on September 29. With the season progressing, the Navy women's triathlon team is showing signs of growth and resilience, embodying the spirit of continuous improvement and teamwork.

As the season unfolds, keep an eye on these remarkable athletes as they strive for excellence and represent the Navy with pride and determination. Their journey is not just about individual races but about building a legacy of strength, endurance, and team spirit in the face of challenges.
